As much as I think Chris Rock fell down on the stage last night (his anti-Bush riff was particularly stale), his cracks at Hollywood were right on. Hollywood is a sick fish.
Doesn't Swank's golden deuce make it all a big nothing? For crying out loud, Brando only won two!!!
The score stands Swank 2, Scorsese bupkis-- Hollywood is soooo effed up.
Marty Scorsese was absolutely hosed last night. Clearly, Marty's decision to lay it all out for Kazan hasn't helped him with the Academy. It's all about the Work, my ass.
Scorcese, of all people, should understand that the greybeards of the Academy still have Dalton Trumbo on their brains. Did he think they'd finally give him his due for a biopic of a staunch anti-communist like Hughes?
Anyhow, Marty should ditch Leo. Every film he makes with Leo is a doughnut film. The little bit of Leo as Hughes that was shown in last night's Oscarcast was God awful. Leo just isn't an actor. His accent was intermittent and he looked like a waiter trying to be a good actor. He just can't sell it. I think it's because he hasn't suffered enough. He's been working steadily since he was a kid actor on Growing Pains, and he's been banging Brazilian ubermodel Giselle for the last few years. Brando had Nebraska, alcoholic parents and the Shattuck Military Academy. Brando suffered. I know Swank had the trailer park and had to sleep in a car, but she's still too Tracy Flick-ish for me.
Wolcott is all over the shrinking gap between the 20 million dollar babies like Leo D. and the average LaLa Land waiter with big screen dreams. What can we do with the surplus of good looking no-talents in America? Wolcott says, "Porn!"
I agree with you for the most part. Never saw Aviator or Million Dollar Baby - and I'm just not interested. I pretend like I boycott Aviator because Scorcese left out Hughes's bisexuality, which is totally homophobic, but really it just looks boring. I'm not a Leo a fan. He's never convincing.
It is always a laugh though when you righties bash Hollywood but still love you some Schwarzenegger (for Christ's Sake) and washed up Ron Silver.
Ron Silver!
Can I get some coherence from the right please?

I didn't know Hughes was bi. Yeah, Leo sucks.
I don't have any special feeling for Ron Silver-- I don't know where you get that stuff.
I do like Arnie. Let me clear up what you see as a contradiction of the Right... we like Arnie and Tom Selleck because they are grateful to the American people. I just can't understand what a guy like Tim Robbins has to bitch about. I don't like the ideological orthodoxy and lack of humility of the Hollywood Leftists. America has been real good to them. An asshole like Robbins never says Thank You.

I'm sorry but sooo many times I hear rightists dismiss actors whose politics they don't like as simply "actors" or "hollywood", which you'll find Andrew Sullivan often doing for example, while sucking on Reagan's teet and chanting "AH-NULD!"... give me a break.
Robbins and Sarandon and Penn aren't bitching about their own lots. They're criticizing injustice as they perceive it; and they're artists - more than Selleck or Schwarzenegger anyway - and that's what artists do. I don't always agree with them, but i respect them. I even respect Ahnuld even though I disagree with his fiscal policy and he's a bit of a pig.
Being as partisan as you are I just assumed you dug Silver since he narrated Farenhype and spoke at the GOP convention. Don't you respect his "Veronica's Closet" legacy?
Hughes and Cary Grant so used to bone back in the day. Hot, isn't it?

Wow, I didn't know Hughes and Cary Grant were fuck buddies. That is kinda shocking. I thought Hughes, creator of the half-cup bra, was too taken with Jane Russell's tits to be half-gay. Interesting. How do you know about CG and HH?
And I do think That Veronica's Closet legacy line is very funny.

Thanks, CD.
I'm not sure where I heard it first, it was years ago. There's a book out which was taken pretty seriously, don't remember the name, could easily google it. Not sure if it's universally accepted as fact but, well, a homo knows.
They were bone'n.
Tyrone Power too.

I had fun with google-- they were so screwing. I think they both screwed Randolph Scott too. Interesting...
